Johnny Cash in the Promised Land coming
Johnny Cash in the Holy Land is a topic to ring in an audience and get them fired up. That’s what Shalom Goldman, professor of Middle Eastern Studies, will discuss in a program titled “In the Holy Land with Johnny Cash: Christian Zionism and American Popular Culture” on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Carlos Museum reception hall.
Goldman will also talk about Johnny and June Carter Cash’s five pilgrimages to Israel. “The Cash family, starting with John and June Carter Cash and continuing with Roseanne and John Carter Cash, have visited Israel many times and have made ‘Zion' the subject of many of their songs,” Goldman says.
He says the event marks the publication of his book, "Zeal for Zion,” in which he writes about public figures who influenced the American conversation about Zionism and Israel, including country and gospel musicians.
Invoking Cash means music and local musicians, Lisa Deaton and The Blind Dates, will perform songs by the Man in Black and others about the Promised Land at the free, public event. “Roseanne Cash's moving song ‘the Western Wall’ — recently recorded by Emmylou Harris and Linda Rondstat — is one of many such songs that will be featured in this event,” Goldman says.
